Drug and Alcohol Abuse in the Workplace

Substance abuse can be an immense challenge in the workplace.  Drug and alcohol use outside or inside the office is costly for employers. Substance abuse leads to higher turnover rate, absenteeism, and excessive mistakes.

Not only does substance abuse result in bad morale and low productivity, it’s dangerous. In fact, employees with alcohol dependencies were nearly three times more likely to have injury-related absences, according to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.

Drug-Free Workplace Programs

Research shows companies can provide help and support to employees with substance abuse problems. The National Institute on Drug Abuse has found that employers who implemented drug-free workplace programs saw positive effects and encouraging results. With the programs in place, employers saw an increase in productivity and decreases in downtime, theft, accidents, and absenteeism.

If substance abuse is prevalent in your company, consider adding a drug-free workplace program and monitor how it affects your employee and your business.
