Brandon Whitten Institute
THE BRANDON WHITTEN INSTITUTE FOR ADDICTION AND RECOVERY
The Brandon Whitten Institute was established at East Central University by the Whitten-Newman Family Foundation and F.A.T.E., to serve as a resource for preventing substance abuse and addiction. The outreach provided – both on-campus and in the community – is integral in working to change perceptions about the disease of addiction and offer hope to those affected directly and indirectly by drug and alcohol abuse. To date, the BWI has obtained more than $1,000,000 in grants to help educate and implement substance abuse and addiction education programs.
Brandon Whitten’s Story
Brandon Whitten was an all-American football star and beloved son. However, as a young man he developed an addiction that ultimately cost him his life. After Brandon’s untimely death, his father Reggie Whitten dedicated himself to raising awareness of substance abuse and addiction. Reggie created the Brandon Whitten Institute for Addiction and Recovery so that through education and support, individuals, families and communities could heal from the devastating effects of addiction.
About the Whitten-Newman Family Foundation
For the last decade, the Whitten-Newman Family Foundation has worked throughout Oklahoma to honor the memory of Brandon Whitten, and to help make an impact on others who have been affected by addiction. With an emphasis on providing knowledge and support, the Foundation has been able to help thousands of students and community members at the Brandon Whitten Institute for Addiction and Recovery.
FATE, or Fighting Addiction Through Education, is committed to making a positive change in our community, equipping individuals with the knowledge and resources they need to fight the dangers of substance abuse and addiction.
